Is Your Website Secure Enough For Google?

The search engine giant is starting to mark HTTP websites which collect passwords or credit card details as ‘Not Secure’ from January 2017 on Google Chrome.

Google has made its stance towards better digital security clear for a long time now, encouraging webmasters to opt for HTTPS encryption for their websites and adding HTTPS as a ranking signal which can help improve a site’s search engine rankings back in 2014.

This year, Google has taken things to the next level, after announcing in September 2016 that HTTP websites which collect passwords or credit card information will start being marked as ‘Not Secure’ in Chrome from January 2017, with the launch of Chrome 56. This represents a significant shift from the previously neutral notifications and in time, we can expect to see all HTTP websites being marked as ‘Not Secure’ with a more prominent, red security indicator.

Considering that Chrome has over 53% of the mobile/tablet browser market share, according to recent statistics by NetMarketShare and taking into account the prevalence of mobile usage which has been increasing steadily in recent years, 2017 is the perfect time to make the transition to a secure, HTTPS website.

And whilst implementing HTTPS site wide coverage is an excellent start towards making your website more secure, it’s important to ensure that you also add other security measures and indicators throughout your ecommerce store (contact details readily available, a strong encryption system for passwords, etc) which can give your customers peace of mind and encourage them to complete their transactions online.
