The second in our series of interviews with the Williams Commerce team sees us chatting to Tom Wheeler, our Head of Ecommerce Delivery.
Take a look and get to know Tom a little better.
Tell us about your background and how long you’ve been with the company.
I first became involved in web design at an early age and built my first website platform at 13. It’s safe to say web development has long been a passion of mine!
I began my career in the Royal Air Force. I spent nine years travelling throughout the world, broadening my skillset in some very challenging environments and situations, before deciding I wanted to be back behind the keyboard.
I have worked in ecommerce for the last 10 years, in customer facing and Project Management roles implementing various types of technologies from POS devices to integrated websites with ERP systems. I have been at Williams Commerce for 3 years and worked across several areas that required my experience and expertise before ending in my current position as the Head of Ecommerce Delivery.
What is your job role and your key responsibilities?
I started at Williams Commerce as a Support and Infrastructure Manager; working with the latest ecommerce platforms, providing managed hosting, advice and guidance to our wide range of customers.
I’ve also been involved in obtaining accreditations such as Cyber Essentials, Cyber Essentials Plus, ISO:27001 and more, which demonstrate the company’s ability to lead by following best industry practice.
In December 2018, I transitioned to Head of Ecommerce Delivery. I now head up our Project Management and Development teams, alongside the Support and Infrastructure departments to ensure the smooth delivery of our ecommerce projects.
To put it in simple terms, on a day to day basis, you can find me working with our highly skilled teams and developing their skillsets to continually look to improve our services.
What is the biggest strength of Williams Commerce in your opinion?
Our different departments at Williams Commerce work together to offer a complete service, supporting our clients from an initial idea, all the way to implementation.
We work with diverse businesses, ranging from new start-ups, to large PLCs. Our teams’ combined knowledge and experience means we are consistently able to help our clients achieve their goals.
Most of the team at Williams Commerce have experience working for successful ecommerce from the client side, so we have a great appreciation of what’s needed to deliver websites which help businesses grow online.
What’s your favourite thing about working at Williams Commerce?
We work at the cutting-edge of technology, from finding ways to help customers increase their online visibility, to bringing completely new platforms to market. We’re always looking to implement and take advantage of new technologies, in order to develop and stay ahead of our competition.
Whilst we work with a wide range of partners and networks, we have an agnostic approach to ecommerce, always focusing on finding the best solution for each client’s specific needs.
Outside of work, what do you like to do?
I am a keen cyclist, and I enjoy snowboarding, windsurfing and clay pigeon shooting.
I look to travel as much as I can, learning about all the different cultures and experiences the world has to offer. Also love great food, Sushi being one of my favourites.
